The tree paintings mark a very special chapter in my evolution as a painter. I had been working on a body of work for several months –perhaps 20 paintings—and I could not resolve a single one of them. I was distraught. I went and stood outside my studio in the rain, leaning against a big eucalyptus tree, crying and praying for guidance. The next morning when I went into the studio, I started reworking all of the paintings into abstract trees. I had not made any decision to do so, I didn’t even think about it. It just happened. Ever since then, trees have been one of the motifs I return to again and again, and one of my best selling bodies of work.
Depending upon where someone was raised, they will usually identify the trees with something they’re familiar with. People from the east coast will see them as birches. People from the mountains will see them as aspens. For me, even though I was first inspired by eucalyptus, the trees are not meant to be specific representations. Rather, they transmit the essence of treeness.
